Pompeii & Sorrento

Day 9

I would have been quite content to remain in Positano.  The town perched on the hillside whereas you are always climbing down to the beach or up to the hotel or road with shopping in between.  It was a very comfortable place to savor il dolce far niente – the sweetness of doing nothing.  However we are moving on down the coast to Sorrento.  We dropped our bags at the hotel and had an orientation walk around town which ended at Gelateria Davide where we were taught the art of GELATO.  Naturally, we were able to taste our creation before enjoying our lunch there.

Pompeii & Sorrento: About

Frozen in time

Pompeii

  • One of the things I like about the Rick Steves guidebooks is the instructions on how to get around like a local – and it was enjoyable on the tour to take the Circumvesuviana commuter train to Pompeii instead of the bus.

  • We were met by a local guide that was able to walk us through the ruins that are frozen in time and explain everyday life, which even includes a “red light district”.  Fascinating art work taken from here that we saw later in Naples, fortunately we didn’t have any children in our group – this is X rated stuff.

  • We were given more time on our own to explore Pompeii and really get the feel of the community and if we wanted to stay longer, we could travel back to Sorrento via the Circumvesuviana on our own.
