Southern Italy - A Rick Steves Tour
Alberobello
Day 5 - Trulli Houses
Such pleasant surprises off the beaten path! Today we started heading back west a little but first we are going south to Alberobello to see the stone trulli houses. What a neat place! The village was quaint, a delight to wander, and quite the unusual place - All white with the same roofs, even the church.

Food
Tholos - Winebar
Our lunch in the village was a gourmet treat of local meats, cheeses, breads, olives and paired with local wines. Our host was most gracious and generous with his samples and time. But the expertise of pairing the wines with cheeses and meats had us all SALIVATING. This is a definitely a must do on any trip.

Matera
The Sassi
The second part of the day and our stay for two nights is Matera and in a neighborhood called The Sassi. My residence would be one of the ancient stone caves that have been remodeled into a hotel room. I hated to gloat, but I did have to show my room off to my tour mates.
